The latest failure of the UK’s air traffic control system has renewed concerns over the resilience of critical national infrastructure following disruption at airports across the country.
NATS restored its air traffic control system following Thursday’s incident, but the failure caused disruption to flights and raised questions over the ability of critical aviation infrastructure to withstand technical problems.
The incident follows previous failures at the air traffic control provider. A major outage in August 2023 forced NATS to restrict the number of aircraft entering UK airspace for about four hours after its flight planning system encountered an unusual set of data it could not process.
That failure resulted in average delays of two hours for 579 flights and an estimated 1,500 cancellations on the day, according to NATS. The company subsequently upgraded its software and carried out an internal investigation into the incident.
The latest disruption is likely to increase scrutiny of the resilience and redundancy built into systems supporting UK aviation, particularly the ability of backup infrastructure to prevent individual technical failures from causing widespread disruption.
Jake Madders, director and co-founder of Hyve Managed Hosting, said restoring services was only the first step in understanding the incident.
“Getting the system running again isn’t enough,” he said. “We need to know what failed, why resilience and failover didn’t prevent the disruption, and what has changed since previous incidents.”
Madders cautioned against speculation over the cause of the failure, saying there was currently no evidence that it resulted from a cyberattack.
But he said that until a root cause was established, investigators would need to consider a range of possibilities, including software, infrastructure, configuration, human error and cybersecurity.
“This goes beyond aviation,” Madders said. “Critical infrastructure needs to be designed so that the failure of one system doesn’t become a national incident.”
