The Project Management Institute (PMI) has launched a revised version of its flagship Project Management Professional (PMP) certification, updating one of the world’s most widely recognised project management qualifications to reflect the changing demands of the profession.

The new examination, introduced on 9 July, places greater emphasis on business alignment, sustainability, critical thinking and delivering projects in environments increasingly shaped by artificial intelligence.

The PMP certification has been recognised globally for more than four decades and is widely used by employers as a benchmark for project management capability. The latest update reflects growing demand for professionals who can combine technical delivery skills with broader commercial judgement and strategic decision-making.

PMI said the revised exam is intended to better reflect the realities of modern project management, where professionals are expected to navigate technological change, integrate AI into delivery processes and demonstrate stronger links between project outcomes and business objectives.

The organisation also published new research suggesting the qualification continues to deliver career benefits for those who obtain it.

According to PMI’s latest global customer survey, 69 per cent of PMP holders believe the certification provides a competitive advantage in the job market, while 83 per cent said it strengthened their CV.

Among professionals who earned the qualification within the past three years, three-quarters reported at least one career benefit. More than half said the certification had increased their confidence when making decisions, while 40 per cent said it had helped create new career opportunities.
